In his first State of the Union address, five months after assuming office following President Nixon’s resignation, President Gerald R. Ford told Congress he didn’t expect much applause because “I’ve got bad news.” He detailed the country’s economic and energy woes, blaming, in part, “ever-increasing levels of government benefits.” On the eve of the American bicentennial, he urged his countrymen “to move in a new direction.” close
