The committee heard testimony on the actions of the government concerning the March 1993 siege of an armed religious cult near Waco, Texas. The government originally raided the cult for federal weapons violations. A 51-day siege ensued, ended by an FBI attempt to pressure the cult to surrender through the use of tear gas, during which the cult compound burnt to the ground. Eighty cult members, including their leader David Koresh, died in the fire. close
