Former Secretary James Baker III talked about his book, The Politics of Diplomacy: Revolution, War, and Peace, 1989-1992, published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons. It’s an account of Mr. Baker’s time as the 61st Secretary of State from January 1989 to August 1992 under President George H.W. Bush. During that time, the world saw the fall of the Berlin Wall, the invasion of Panama, end of apartheid in South Africa, collapse of the Soviet Union, the first Gulf War, and Middle East peace talks. Mr. Baker offers behind-the-scenes information about the period of time leading up to many of these events, as well as the new challenges that these changes created. The author also writes about his encounters with world leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, Francois Mitterand, Helmut Kohl, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Hosni Mubarak. close
