President Harding Profile

Historians, scholars and descendants discussed the public and private lives of President Harding. Viewers also participated in the discussion by telephone. President Harding’s campaign was noted for its novel use of the increasingly important media. President Harding’s administration promised a “return to normalcy,” but was rocked by the Teapot Dome scandal, which involved misuse of the federal naval oil reserves. He also decided not to join the newly created League of Nations, which President Wilson had so ardently supported. He died of a stroke on August 2, 1923. Mr. Loveday also provided a tour of President Harding’s home, in which he lived from 1890 to 1920 when he moved to the White House.
