Washington and Lee students representing all fifty states listened to speakers before casting their nomination votes state by state. The university has held mock conventions for the party not currently in the White House since 1908. Senator John Warner (R-VA) spoke about the need for a Republican president to help a Republican Congress enact changes to the tax code and entitlement reform. William Bennett spoke about the need to return to citizenship in U.S. society. Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) spoke about the Republican effort to return power to local governments. The group nominated Senator Bob Dole (R-KS) for president and Colin Powell for vice president. close
