A portion of US Senate floor debate on a bill S 4 to raise minimum wage in the United Sates. Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) had introduced the bill in January of 1989 to raise the minimum wage up from $3.35 per hour, where it had been set since 1981. Sen Orrin Hatch (R-UT) spoke offering a compromise to the bill. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) spoke about the Exxon Valdez oil spill which took place two weeks prior. close
