Current news events and political issues were examined through reviews of the morning newspapers; interviews with journalists, newsmakers and legislators; and viewer telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. In the first segment, Mr. Pearson talked about the morning headlines. In the next segment, Mr. Castle talked about the Republican environmental agenda. In the newspaper roundtable, former Governor Campbell and former Rep. Foley talked about current issues including the upcoming presidential elections. Ms. Miller talked by telephone about her first vote and interest in politics. In the next segment, Mr. Lalli and Ms. MacDonald discussed current issues including the federal budget and tax reform. In the final segment, Ms. Quayle and Ms. Quinn talked about current issues including budget and social issues. Lalli and MacDonald discussed testifying before the House Ways and Means Committee today on replacing the current federal tax system. Lalli’s panel will focus on the complexity of the system while MacDonald’s panel will examine the relationship between the IRS and taxpayers.
