After receiving the In Praise of Reason award, Mr. Lederman spoke about the challenges facing the scientific community at the dawn of the 21st century. He focused on several specific challenges, including the declining availability of both public and private funds for research and what he called, “anti-science,” those who criticize science or offer non-scientific alternatives. He then offered possible ways to challenge opponents, such as education, but he also emphasized that scientists need some sort of organization to effectively wage this struggle. close
