On the lawn of Monticello, Andrew Burstein spoke about his new book, The Inner Jefferson: Portrait of a Grieving Optimist, which examines President Thomas Jefferson’s private correspondence. He talked about the many sides of Jefferson’s personality which he only revealed in his private letters, especially in his expressions of his innermost feelings. He also examined how he was a product of the historical period in which he lived. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from the audience. close
