Participants discussed the role of African-Americans in Union naval forces during the Civil War. Each of the panelists is participating in an ongoing four-year research project on this subject. The discussion focused on various aspects of their experiences, including those while escaping through Confederate lines, those aboard Union and Confederate ships and those after the war. This was part of a forum during the preliminary dedication of a monument of Civil War African-American soldiers on the Mall in Washington, DC. Questions from the audience were taken after the panelists remarks. close
