Incumbent Senator Smith debated challengers Democrat Swett and Libertarian Blevens in the New Hampshire Senate campaign. Senator Smith was running for his second term. Mr. Blevens claimed to be the only candidate not in violation of NH election laws and described his Libertarian views. Senator Smith emphasized trust in the incumbent candidate for lower spending and smaller government. Representative Swett spoke of public service and noted that he refused the Congressional pay raise and junkets. Blevens talked of cuts in education & welfare. Smith didn’t want to cut social programs and Swett thought cuts to corporate welfare were needed. Questions continued on education, abortion, legalization of drugs, foreign policy in Bosnia, cutting the deficit, regulating the internet and healthcare. Some questions come from New Hampshire voters. close
