Mr. O’Sullivan spoke about the meaning of the 1996 elections. He stressed that the U.S. electorate is currently in flux between truly conservative ideas, such as fiscal restraint and more federalism, and the liberal ideas of the New Deal and the Great Society. He also outlined the greatest challenges facing the nation, including fiscal challenges, but more importantly, social and cultural disintegration and the struggle over a single American identity. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from the audience. close
