Military officials, Vietnam veterans, and their families, and others gathered at the Vietnam Memorial Wall to honor all veterans of the Vietnam War. Phan Thi Kim Phuc, who appeared naked and terrified in an AP photograph in 1972 after her village was destroyed by incendiary bombs dropped from South Korean aircraft, spoke at the event. In her brief remarks, she stated, “If I could talk face to face with the pilot who dropped the bomb, I would tell him we cannot change history but we should try to do things for the present and for the future to promote peace.” The ceremony concluded with the laying of several wreaths and the playing of taps. close
