Committee members heard testimony from two former CIA directors and others on the nature of the nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction threat to North America over the next fifteen years. A report last year by the intelligence community on this topic highlighted sharp differences between the administration and the Republican Congress on this issue and therefore the need for a missile defense system. Mr. Gates also chaired an independent review panel on this 1995 report. The witnesses testified about these two reports, as well as their personal estimates of the missile threats to the U.S. and how the U.S. can better deal with them. close
