At the dedication of a new building for the Freedom Forum Media Studies Center in New York, Mr. Wallace spoke about the lack of public trust in the news media. He focused on the need for a body of journalists, legal experts, public officials and others to act as a jury, without the punishment authority, over the news media. A National News Council did exist from 1973 to 1983, but never had strong support from the media. He also showed several minutes of a “60 Minutes” story on such a news council in Minnesota. Then he and Mr. Gilson took questions from the audience. close
