Friends, colleagues and others gathered to pay tribute to Mario Savio, the free speech advocate who helped begin the wave of student activism against the Vietnam War. In 1964, he led a sit-in at the University of California at Berkeley which forced the school administration to rescind a rule against student political activity. He died on November 6 of heart problems at the age of 53. close
