In his last major speech as FDA Commissioner, Mr. Kessler spoke about improvements in the drug and medical device approval process at a yearly education conference. He cited statistics which showed that the FDA has shortened the approval process, especially for new drugs for life-threatening illnesses. He also compared the FDA in this regard to a new European Union system, which some critics argue works better. However, he also admitted that the medical device approval process is too slow and stated that the agency needs increased funding to make similar gains in that area. close
