House International Relations subcommittee members heard from human rights activists and one of the leaders of the Tiananmen uprising in 1989 against the Chinese government about the Chinese response to the protests. This hearing was called in response to an assertion made last week by the Chinese defense minister, who was then mainly responsible for suppressing the uprising, that no one was killed during the violence. Some committee members also criticized the administration’s policy toward China. close
