Union leaders and others briefed reporters on their opposition to privatizing the Social Security system. They also outlined how they would reform the system, essentially the plan proposed by former Social Security Commissioner Robert Ball, which includes small changes to various formulas and indexes which are used to compute taxes and benefits. The latest Advisory Council on Social Security, of which Mr. Ball and Women’s Pension Attorney Edith Fierst are members, has failed to agree on any one recommendation for the system and its members have instead proposed three different plans, one of which calls for complete privatization. close
