President Bill Clinton presented seven African-American World War II veterans, six posthumously, with the Congressional Medal of Honor. Seventy-seven-year-old Vernon Baker was the only honoree still alive. They are the first African-Americans from that war to receive the highest U.S. military commendation. In his remarks, the president highlighted the commitment of such African-American soldiers to die for a nation which still did not treat them equally. close
