After an introduction by Vice President Gore, General Woerner unveiled the design for a World War II memorial will be built on the national Mall. President Clinton thanked the Battle Memorial Commission and described the heroism of World War II members of the military. He then presented former Senator Dole with the Medal of Freedom, the highest U.S. civilian honor, for his work as a leader of Congress. Senator Dole is also a decorated veteran of World War II. He thanked the president and spoke about his career. close
