After introductions by Senators Campbell and Skaggs, the committee questioned Federico Pena, President Clinton’s nominee

for Secretary of Energy. He received bipartisan endorsement from

members after sharp questions about the administration’s opposition

to temporary storage of nuclear waste in Nevada. He said that such

interim storage would jeopardize the development of permanent

underground storage at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. He also defended the

existence of the Energy Department. close
