In his first news conference, Commerce Secretary William Daley briefed reporters on U.S. trade statistics for 1996. He emphasized that although the trade deficit increased to $114.2 billion, it was largely due to oil price increases. He also stressed that the trade deficit with Japan and the overall manufacturing deficit have decreased and that the agricultural surplus has increased. close
