As part of the inaugural activities of Freedom Forum’s new Pacific Coast Center, Mr. Barlett discussed the current state of the content of newspapers. He said that newspaper editors are mistaken in thinking readers want mostly frivolous news stories about celebrities. He maintained that readers want extensive coverage of public affairs and that the lack of this kind of coverage is causing newspaper readership to dwindle. Mr. Barlett, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, is co-author of the book, America: Who Stole the Dream? Following his prepared remarks, he took questions from the audience. close
