Committee members met to discuss how to proceed with the campaign finance investigation. Democratic members made several unsuccessful attempts to broaden the scope and reduce the power of the chair, Rep. Burton, to issues subpoenas unilaterally. Rep. Burton asserted that Republicans would be investigated if there is sufficient evidence of illegal activity, but that for now the investigation would focus on already well known instances of possible abuses by the Democratic presidential campaign. The committee also voted to issue several subpoenas relating to the hiring of Webster Hubbell by several firms after he left the Department of Justice and White House relations with Johnny Chung. close
