The United States House of Representatives voted on various amendments to a housing deregulation bill. The measures would permit public housing authorities to admit a mix of residents making various incomes, as opposed to just families paying over 50% of income in rent. It also would authorize elected Resident Councils to consult with Public Housing Authorities on housing management, and the creation of a Resident Management Corporation to manage and/or buy a development. The bill would also shift a number of federal housing programs to local Public Housing Authorities. It required adults in public housing not working or in job training perform 8 hours of community service a month, except for senior citizens and the disabled. close
