Subcommittee members heard testimony from Social Security Administration, government auditors and others concerning the online availability of Social Security data. This hearing was called after the online service which provided information about earnings and projected retirement funds was cancelled last month after several members expressed concerns about information privacy. The witnesses offered several ways to increase security, including requiring more identifying information and locking records after several incorrect attempts to open them but several committee members wondered if these measures were worth the cost and would be enough to ensure information privacy. close
