The House subcommittee on Telecommunications, Trade and Consumer Protection and television industry officials heard comments by randomly selected families in Peoria, Illinois. They commented on whether the hearings are informative and discriminating enough and how the system could be improved. Television industry representatives, including Jack Valenti, President and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, also explained the rationale behind the ratings system. Many examples of ratings were shown including clips from Seinfeld and NYPD Blue. Journalist Sander Vanocur moderated the town hall portion of the hearing. close
