President Bill Clinton announced he will extend Most Favored Nation status to China for the next year which means that China receives better trade treatment, such as reduced tariffs and other benefits, than non most favored nations. The president said that an open trading relationship with China is important in encouraging China toward a more open society and that China is cooperating with the U.S. on a broad variety of issues. Congress can undo the president’s extension if it so chooses. The president also made brief remarks about welfare reform. close
