Former Senator Mathias defined the importance of liberalism in America. He argued that liberalism allows for freedom of opinion and democracy. He also stated that liberalism is an important element of our economic institutions of free enterprise and private property. Finally, he argued that one cannot condemn liberalism without condemning the political heritage of our nation. Mathias concluded by listing four things necessary to make liberalism stronger in America: a more responsive government, more compassion for the welfare of our fellow citizens, more open-mindedness in the pursuit of education, and, most importantly, more people to declare openly that they are liberals. These will reverse the slow abolishment of liberalism in America. close
