Retired Lt. Col. North was sentenced on three felony counts stemming from his involvement in the Iran-Contra affair. On May 3, North was convicted by a jury of illegally obstructing Congress by creating false chronologies, unlawfully destroying government documents, and accepting an illegal gratuity. Rep. Robert Dornan took questions from the press and was supportive of the North. He said that the sentence was “creative and thoughtful.” Meanwhile, Rep. Lee Hamilton, chairman of the House Iran/Contra, Committee held a press conference inside the capital where he praised the sentence as “good” and “wise.” close
