Mr. Hall spoke about how the media should help people make sense of events occuring in the world around them and journalists' role in the world. Mr. Hall said that the readership and viewership of newspapers and television are less and less interested in world affairs. He cited a recent article that said that American news broadcasters are declining their coverage of the world and closing down bureaus in foreign cities. Mr. Hall said the key editorial challenge for journalists is to find new ways of engaging with the audience and present to them information that is significant to their lives even if they don’t realize it. Following his remarks he discussed the issues with Mr. Kalb and took questions from the audience. close
