The committee meets to vote on the nomination of William Lucas to be Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in the Department of Justice. The result is a seven to seven deadlock, which leaves Lucas one vote short of a favorable nomination. On an identical vote, the committee also rejects a Republican proposal to send the nomination to the Senate floor without a recommendation. Therefore the nomination is rejected. close
