The Senate passed H. R. 2712, the Emergency Chinese Immigration Act, to waive the 2-year foreign residence requirement for visiting Chinese students in order to apply for U.S. citizenship. The Senate approved H.R. 2989, making appropriations for the Treasury Dept., U.S. Postal Service, executive office of the president and other agencies. The Senate passed H.R. 2461, authorizing appropriations for the Department of Defense for FY90 and FY91, continuing funding for the B-2 aircraft, SDI research, and the MX and Midgetman missile programs. The Oil Pollution Liability and Compensation Act, S. 686, was passed to consolidate and improve federal laws providing compensation and establishing liability for oil spills. The Senate passed H.R. 3024 to increase the public debt limit. The Senate adjourned until Sept. 6, 1989. close
