Members of Congress presented Mother Teresa with a Congressional Gold Medal for her years of humanitarian work in developing countries. The D.C. Boys Choir performed at the ceremony as did Wintley Phipps. Representative Henry Hyde, R-Illinois, spoke of Mother Teresa’s compassion and quoted Camus to illustrate the work of Mother Teresa and her missionaries. Majority Leader Senator Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, said the ceremony was done for the sake of Mother Teresa’s work not for selfish reasons and her following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Mother Teresa spoke and thanked Congress for its generosity and urged others to help those less fortunate than they. close
