Committee members continued the investigation into campaign abuses

during the past campaign. Three Buddhist nuns and testified about a

fund-raiser at a Buddhist temple in Hacienda Heights, California in

April 1996. Two nuns who live at the temple testified about their

knowledge of the event and their destruction of documents relating to

it after press report came out about in October 1996. The other nun,

Man Ya, who lives at a temple in Texas, talked about her contribution

of $5,000 to the Democratic National Committee for which the temple

reimbursed her. The witnesses and the lawyer for the California

temple stressed that members of this sect do not take strict vows of

poverty and that reimbursement from the temple funds is a normal

practice for many different types of expenditures. close
