The subcommittee continues investigations of misuse of funds by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Chairman Tom Lantos enforces a house rule permitting former HUD secretary Samuel Pierce to bar media coverage of his testimony. When television and radio communications resume, Chairman Lantos reports that Mr. Pierce had entered, invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly and left the hearing room. Committee members then give their responses to the actions of Mr. Pierce. close
