New York Times columnist Anthony Lewis spoke about the example of Elijah Lovejoy as a lesson for the importance of the freedom of expression. He stressed that ideas that seem dangerous to the current social order are often suppressed by the government or the great majority of the population. Lovejoy was killed in 1837 by an angry mob in Alton, Illinois for trying to publish an abolitionist newspaper. close
