The USS Nimitz and its crew were profiled through footage shot while the ship was stationed off the California coast over the summer. Admiral McGinn and Mr. Kreisler talked about the ship’s capabilities and procedures and took viewer calls. The Nimitz was commissioned in 1975 and named after World War Two admiral Chester A. Nimitz. It weighs about 97,000 tons and carries a standard complement of 85 aircraft. Two more Nimitz-class carriers are currently under construction, the Harry S. Truman and the Ronald Reagan. The USS Nimitz arrived in the Persian Gulf on October 12. close
