German Chancellor Helmut Kohl spoke about government policy to reduce German unemployment while lowering budget deficits to prepare for European currency union. He stressed that the government should make policy to help the private sector grow to reduce unemployment rather than providing more benefits or government work. Rudolph Scharping, the leader of the opposition, called for a more active government policy on boosting employment despite any concerns about such a policy’s effects on German readiness for European monetary union. close
