The panel is from a conference titled “Ethics of Political News Reporting and Advertising on Television.” Threlkeld, who graduated from Ripon College in 1959, was the main speaker. His presentation included excerpts of network news stories involving Gary Hart, Joe Biden and Dan Quayle. Threlkeld maintained that a political candidate’s character is an important and legitimate subject of reporting. He also expressed concern over discerning truth from rumor. Rev. Langan, who is professor of Christian ethics in the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University, and Judy Woodruff responded to Threlkeld’s remarks. close
