Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN), the chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, reacted to Attorney General Janet Reno’s decision not to appoint an independent counsel to investigate fund-raising abuses by the Clinton administration. He admitted that he was not surprised by the announcement, but added that Reno’s strict interpretation of the independent counsel statute rendered the law ineffectual. close
