Secretary of State George Shultz answered questions concerning his knowledge of the Iran arms sales. Secretary Shultz and Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger were criticized by the Tower Commission for “distancing themselves” from the Iran initiative. Secretary Shultz stated that both he and Secretary Weinberger strongly opposed the Iran initiative in a December 7, 1985 White House meeting. Secretary Shultz also, on Representative Inouye’s invitation, commented on the need to keep intelligence and policy separate and for accountability in executive branch decision making. close
