On the fifth day of public hearings regarding the TWA flight 800 crash, testimonies focused on ways to reduce the flammability of fuel tanks. Representatives from Boeing, the military, the FAA and pilots shared already proven ways to reduce flammability such as filling unused fuel tanks with foam or inert gases, such as nitrogen. They also examined how these military solutions could or could not be applied to civilian aircrafts. In his closing remarks, Chairman Jim Hall stressed that the NTSB would continue its two-tiered approach to preventing another such accident by reducing the volatility of aircraft fuel and by eliminating any possible ignition sources. close
