Senator John Glenn,Jr (D-OH) was scheduled to participate in a ten-day shuttle mission scheduled to lift off on October 8. He briefed reporters about the purpose of the mission and what it means to him to be going back to space. Senator Glenn was the first American to orbit planet Earth during a solo mission in 1962.
