Committee members continued their investigation into campaign fund-raising abuses during the 1996 election cycle. Secretary Babbitt testified about the rejection of an Indian casino in Hudson, Wisconsin. He denied any contacts with Harold Ickes, Don Fowler or other influential persons concerning the casino application and stressed that the decision to reject the application was made on its merits alone. The Department of Justice is conducting a preliminary investigation into the matter and has until February 11 to decide whether to appoint an independent counsel to investigate the matter further. close
