Gutiérrez (D-IL) was one of several witnesses called before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights, Chaired by Illinois Senator Richard Durbin. The hearing concerned "stand your ground" laws like those in Florida and more than 20 other states that were a central issue in the shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin.
