Coal Miner details life of hard physical trauma and near suicidality, where opioid medication made it possible for him to work. Dr. Kolodny underscores that the opioids are "made from opium" and "in effect, heroin pills". He endorses short-term use and use at the end of life. He asserts that use for chronic pain produces addiction and that pain relief described by caller was only "at the outset". "What you'll often see is that people's functioning begins to decline." "Many of the patients put on these medications wind up addicted." He acknowledges there "might be a role" for persons like the caller. "Over time many patients wind up doing very poorly." close
