Senate armed Services Committee - FEBRUARY 9, 2017 - Afghanistan military operations commander General John Nicholson updated the Senate Armed Services Committee on security operations and counterterrorism efforts in Afghanistan. He described the security situation as a “stalemate” and said a few thousand more troops were needed to adequately train, advise. and assist the Afghan military. General Nicholson also voiced concerns about the increase of external actors interfering in Afghanistan, specifically Russia and its efforts to publicly legitimize the Taliban. close
