Veterans' Mental Health Veterans Affairs Secretary Dr. David Shulkin testified about preventing veteran suicide before the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee. Sec. Shulkin said veteran suicide prevention is his top priority and outlined efforts to improve mental health access. He noted that the VA has a problem with recruiting mental health professionals and asked the committee for increased hiring authorities. The VA recently issued a report which found that veterans commit suicide at a higher rate in the western U.S. and rural states. Also, the suicide rate was 2.5 times higher among female veterans than for female civilians. close
